Good question.
Rewind to about a year ago. Colby was just over three years old and Audrey was 4 months old. If you were to ask us how's it going we might have just shrugged and said " surviving" :( We were seeing a speech therapist and Colby was showing some red flags for autism so we had been sent to a psychologist, who put him on a list to wait for a diagnosis of some sort. So Colby was on the list and we weren't sure what was going on really. He was happy some off the time, but when he was upset, there was nothing that I could do that would help. We tried time outs, revoking privileges, quiet times, naps, and read every parenting book I could get my hands on. I can honestly say that his development was just standing still. He rarely looked anyone in the eye, only said a few words, had tantrums including kicking and screaming and hitting. (Mostly me.) I love him so much and felt at a loss of how to help him communicate or be in a better mood. He had times where he was happy and had lots of fun, it was just unpredictable.
So I started to think about his diet. He ate pretty healthy. Usually eating a bit from all 5 food groups. So I started to think about preservatives and dyes and thought I would try to cut them out.
I started making my own homemade whole grain flax bread. I thought I was being a super prudent and thoughtful mom (insert irony here). Anyways Colby started eating lots of it because let's face it everyone loves fresh bread. But this is when his fits got to as long as 40 minutes a few times a day. I just didn't know what was bugging him. It took me a month to put two and two together. Finally i googled gluten and autism and low and behold there was a meca of info online. Turns out that gluten and the digestive track and your brain are all connected. So I figured it was kind of a last resort. But we would give it a try anyways.I really didn't think it would work.
So we commited to trying it anyways because we felt like we were out of options. So we did. 4 days later Colby started emerging into this different child. He was cutting his fits from 40 minutes to 4 minutes, he was making eye contact, and even started using more new words daily. It was awesome. I couldn't believe it. People who we saw frequently saw him the following week and they could hardly believe the difference. He was finally feeling better. Praise The Lord! We found what was bugging him.
I also saw improvements in a drastic reduction in the amount of headaches I got. I had always attributed them to back pain but it turns out they come from when I eat gluten. Crazy.
So two out of four our family members felt significantly better. So we continue on in this journey. Glad to be feeling better and healing our bodies.
Sooo that is why we do gluten free diet. As well as lactose free. All four of us are lactose free and my husband Dan can't have acidic food.
So if you are looking at some unresolved health issues, headaches, stomach pains, digestive troubles, brain fogginess or moodiness maybe its worth a try to find out if its the gluten that's bugging you.
So going through the process it was expensive shopping in health food stores, but over the past few months I have realized that I can do 95% of my shopping at superstore. Hooray. So my blog will be about the products they have for the most part.
My plan is to take you slowly, with easy and manageable steps. So it won't be super overwhelming. I would love it if you are gonna follow along just leave me a comment. Ask any questions you like. The more interest I get the more effort I can put into it. Also if you have suggestions please share and I will see what I can do.
Today, if you wanna start the process of going gluten free the first step is to look at your regular menus and figure out what you already make that is gluten free. Chances are that you already eat stuff that's gluten free. Fresh meat, fruit, vegetables, dairy, rice and potatoes start eating those things for your meals.
